Beyoncé, Coldplay, Eminem, Mumford & Sons, Plan B, Red Hot Chili Peppers and REM are among the artists taking part in the album and accompanying charity campaign alsongside PledgeMusic.
The Rhythms Del Mundo: Africa album was officially launched on 2 July and follows on from 2006’s Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba, which was a great success, 2009’s Rhythms del Mundo: Classics – another smash hit and last year’s Rhythms Del Mundo: Revival. All these albums were made on behalf of the Artists Project Earth (APE) charity, which was formed after 2004’s Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. It now concentrates on raising funds to relieve the effects of climate change and and natural disasters around the world.
The latest album is a collaboration between the western rock and pop stars and African musicians such as Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyate, Ali Farka Touré Band, and Rokia Traoré, with 14 African-style covers of contemporary hits. There are also accessories such as music t-shirts, posters and bags available through the campaign.
