Coldplay frontman Chris Martin declared his indifference to established notions of “cool” this week, insisting that “if you want to wear a thong and dance to Abba, that, to me, is rock ‘n’ roll.”
In a Sunday Times interview, the singer-songwriter said that the music industry was too obsessed with “cool” and was developing some tiresome stereotypes of how a rock star should behave, arguing instead that “rock ‘n’ roll is freedom to be yourself.”
The fifth Coldplay album comes out next month, by the name of Mylo Xyloto. Martin said that “we wanted it to be called something that doesn’t mean anything yet, giving the album to be totally its own thing.”
“It’s a mystery, but we like that. We just invented two words that you couldn’t even Google. We tried it and got no results.”
More power to him, although let’s hope that the sight of Martin clad in a thong boogying to Dancing Queen does not end up on a million music t-shirts!
