Pop legend Elton John launched another broadside in his war of words with diva queen Madonna this week, when he made mocking reference to lip-syncing over her coming performance at the US Super Bowl.
Madonna is due to sing at the half-time show of Sunday’s Super Bowl, and Elton, who has mocked the Material Girl’s supposed propensity for miming live in the past, just couldn’t hold himself back.
While being interviewed on Good Morning America today, he was asked what advice he might have for Madonna – to which he replied snarkily: “Make sure you lip-sync good.”
Despite the high calibre of stars who have sung at previous Super Bowl shows, such as Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, Elton went on to insist that he had “never seen a decent one. Never ever.”
He added: “You have to play live, but I don’t think you can. In all fairness to everyone who’s done one before, you may be able to sing live, but it’s really hard to play live.”
Elton’s first attack on Madonna’s vocal abilities took place in 2004, after Madonna won the Best Live Act gong at the GQ Awards in 2004. At the time, he said: “Madonna, best f***ing live act? F*** off! Since when has lip-synching been live? That’s me off her f***ing Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No.”
His husband David Furnish also joined in the spat more recently, having to apologise for a series of snarky messages on Twitter after Madonna beat Elton to the Best Original Song award at the Golden Globes earlier in the month. Furious Furnish declared the singer to be “embarrassing” and a “narcissist.”
“Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit,” he sniped.
“Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Lady Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”
For her part, Madonna has insisted that she always sings live, and has been working hard on her Super Bowl performance, spending the past two weeks trying to get it just right.
Over a billion people are due to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, making the event a major marketing opportunity for Madonna music t-shirts. Madonna is due to perform four of her songs, including classic crowd-pleaser Vogue and her latest single Give Me All Your Luvin. Acrobats from the world-famous Cirque du Soleil will also be joining her on stage.
